Here is a study conducted in 1978 on the effects of subliminal messaging upon weight loss:

Two experiments were conducted using two groups of 26 and 30 women. The women were over 15% overweight. They were divided into 2 groups, being the ‘subliminal group’ and a ‘control group’. Both groups were given some information on weight loss and healthy eating.

Then at the beginning of every session everyone was told to imagine a situation in which they would be tempted to eat.

It was at this point that both of the groups were exposed to a subliminal message for 4 milliseconds At this point they were exposed to a subliminal message for 4 milliseconds. Either a weight loss based subliminal message for the subliminal group / a neutral subliminal was played for the control group.

Results showed that the ‘subliminal group’ lost more weight than the control group, even after the end of the follow up period when the researchers caught up with the 2 groups to assess continued weight loss.

Here is another study conducted by Dr. Becker et al on subliminal messaging and weight loss. Dr. Becker had a weight loss clinic, and played to them 2 tapes containing subliminal messages.

His results were astounding:

  • One woman even lost 100 pounds within one year.
  • In follow up interviews Dr. Becker found 50% of the patients maintained over half their weight loss for up to two years following the subliminal program.
  • Even better- 23% maintained between 75% and 100% of their total weight loss.
  • Furthermore these figures were significantly better than diet programs in which he did not use subliminal messaging.

More Research

There is a lot more research into subliminal audio and visual stimuli, some conducted scientifically, some written up from case studies, and some conducted from a social science angle. Here is the summary of a psychological research study into subliminal messaging and its influence to help stop smoking. The study was conducted by Palmatier and Bornstein:

Thirty-four people in a three week group therapy session to help smoking cesssation took part in the study. The therapy sessions were carried out as normal, however, after the therapy half of the group were exposed to subliminal messages designed to aid in quitting smoking, while the other group were not exposed to any messages at all.

The findings one month after the therapy sessions reported a significantly lower relapse rate of the people in the group who received the subliminal messages, this group was significantly less likely to start smoking again.

Another follow up study was undertaken by Palmatier and Bornstein, in which they found very similar results, here is their conclusion: “subliminal messaging noticeably improved the progress of subjects attempting to quit smoking”, this is in comparison to their control groups who were not exposed to any subliminal messages.

In 1982 two Israeli psychologists conducted a study into subliminal messaging, by giving a maths test to groups of participants who had been exposed to subliminal messaging.

  • Two groups of10th graders was shown the subliminal messages “Mommy and I are one” or “My teacher and I are one” in Hebrew. The control group was shown a neutral message: “People are walking in the street”. These messages were played four times a week for a duration of 6 weeks.
  • At the end of the expiriments the results showed that the group who had been exposed to the messages “Mommy and I are one” scored better in the maths test than either of the other groups

Ariam and Siller reported that the message “Mommy and I are one” increased the students self-esteem and therefore increased their learning potential and ability.

In a follow up study the messages were actually revealed to the students – (making them “paraliminal” i.e. above the threshold of consciousness, rather than subliminal). Under these conditions where the students could clearly hear the messages the maths test results were consistent across the 3 groups – supporting the use of sending a subliminal message rather than a regular audible messsage.
