Overcoming shyness and social anxiety can be difficult, especially if you have been shy for all of your life. Shyness can be a curse. It can hold you back in life, stop you from taking opportunities, from having them presented to you even. It can make you seen as antisocial, rude, or boring – the list goes on.

You don’t have to be the biggest extrovert in the world, but  just overcoming your shyness and social anxiety a little will take you a long way in life. The good news is that you can.

Shyness is all in the mind – 2 people can be presented with the exact same situation – perhaps meeting new people at a party. The first person is excited to meet them, interested to find out about their lives and share information about themselves. They thrive on the interaction and their mood is boosted. The other person (perhaps you) panics, gets full of anxiety; worrying what to say, wondering what people will think of them, imagining the worst – the social embarrassment etc.

The situation is the same but how people react can be completely different. Because this is all in your mind there is action you can take. The first persons beliefs, and thought processes are very different to yours, the way their mind works makes them respond positively to social situations and meeting new people. What you need to do is make your mind react and work in the same way as theirs. If your mind held the same beliefs and thought patterns then you too would be confident socially.

There are a few ways you can do this based on the principles of NLP. NLP can be basically used to monitor how you think about social situations, then compare that to the way other people who are confident socially think. Then it is used to change the way you think to mirror that of the confident person – you essentially swap your beliefs for theirs, and you gradually become more confident too.
