Here is the results of a subliminal research study by Lee, I., Tyrer, P. and Horn, S., as published in the British Journal of Psychiatry in1983:
- 32 patients were being treated for agoraphobia by watching a video twice a week for a total duration of 3 weeks. The 32 patients were split into 4 groups, and 3 test groups watched the very same movie, containing a varied selection of agoraphobic scenes, while a 4th group – the control group saw a potter working at his wheel.
- Of the 3 testing groups, just one viewed the video at a level below the required visual threshold (the subliminal group), another group saw it as normal (the normal group), and the third group viewed the video half faded (the faded group).
- Results showed the 3rd test group – the faded group to make the biggest improvement out of all of the groups, and follow up interviews confirmed this improvement was maintained after a 12 weeks.
- This indicates indicate that both subliminal and regular presentation of messages can be effective in reducing agoraphobic behavior, but you combine subliminal messaging with regular viewing you can create a much greater effect.
